Social Media – Stop Being Boring!

Many businesses have a social media execution that falls into one of two categories. One, they post rarely. They appear cryptically, then disappear for days or weeks at a time. Or two, they suffer from ‘OMG, we need to be saying something all the time’ syndrome. What do they both have in common? They’re boring!

And, of course, neither comes with any real degree of strategy or sophistication, either. Social media tools are a place for brands to ‘be real’ and showcase their personality. It’s not a place for endless information dumps and tired sales pitches.

So what’s the solution? How do you have a meaningful presence in social media while being engaging at the same time?

For one month, try to do nothing but listen. Ask questions. Conduct user opinion polls. Request feedback and suggestions. In short, find out what your followers and fans are saying and then begin to make your conversations. And have fun doing it! Don’t use stuffy, corporate language – unless that’s your brand personality. Instead, loosen up and talk to them like they’re people, too.

If you’re not having fun with your social media execution, then guess what? Your fans probably aren’t either.
